Prince Dimitrie seems to have tough luck waiting for him around every corner. His most recent problems, a dangerous clan of gypsies threatening his life and his father presenting an ultimatum that he must marry within thirty days or lose his crown to his vehement sister, completely exasperate the young man. However, things appear to turn around when he unexpectedly meets a beautiful and seemingly eligible bride in a neighboring village. The fascinating and mysterious young woman steals his heart but with his history of bad breaks he cannot help but wonder if the captivating beauty is too good to be true.
Emerald Baillie is growing weary in her ploy to intimidate the supercilious Prince of Moldavia into releasing her imprisoned brothers. The stunning Duchess of Little Egypt confidently leads her life as gypsy royalty but trying to guide a large group of wayward menaces and keep them out of trouble proves tiresome, even for the poised young woman. With all the pressure resting on her shoulders she panics more and more each day. Fortunately for Emerald, Prince Dimitrie unintentionally makes her search for revenge against him much easier. However, sticking to her mischievous plan by abandoning all emotion and guilt is not as simple when her heart becomes involved.
The Prince of Moldavia opened his eyes and looked around. Sure enough, the beautiful
blond was gone again. “How can I find her?” He asked.
“You can’t, boy. You can’t find a girl like Emerald Baillie. If she wants to be found,
she’ll find you!” Vanda said simply with a shrug.
“What do you mean? That is what I came here for. I must find her,” he begged.
Vanda leaned in and chuckled, “You’ll search for her your whole life, even if you marry
her. Believe me, she is only found if she wants to be. That is just the way Emerald is. Don’t
worry, I believe you’ll see her soon, just be patient. Now, rush home immediately before you
are caught here. Don’t you know how foolish you are? You’re in a campground surrounded by
hundreds of people who hate you. Now run before I have you killed!”
Prince Dimitrie didn’t make the old woman repeat her words. He jumped up and ran from
the tent. He darted through the camp, passing the one he heard mysterious giggles from several
minutes before. The Prince didn’t look behind him or even wince this time as he felt his legs
carry him into the cool fog and although he couldn’t even see two inches in front of his face he
never slowed his speed.
He emerged from the thick haze unscathed and voiced a quick prayer of relief as he
neared Suceava where his favorite steed was stabled. He jumped onto the back of his long-legged
horse, Wind Storm, and galloped into the night. The Prince didn’t look back or take a full breath
until he was safe in his grand master chamber at Praising Place an hour later.

Brittany Jo James, once again, won me over with her creative and writing prowess in ‘At Least I’m Pretty’. Full of adventure, swoon worthy scenes, beautiful descriptive locale, characters that you can’t help but love (or hate), and moral values that we have now neglect. Reminds me of Disney movies that I loved when growing up (and still do).
Prince Dimitrie Cristea, Prince and future King of Moldavia, longed for a content, satisfied life with less power. He loves Moldavia just like how he loves his family, but sometimes being a Prince comes with a lot of responsibility. To him, life is just a constant struggle to please his family and the people who live in his kingdom; he never knew how to LIVE! Not until he met the spirited Emerald Baillie, Duchess and future Queen of the gypsies. Emerald is fun, spontaneous, and headstrong! She loves her family and the people she will someday rule. Unlike Dimitrie, Emerald is respected and loved by her family. They’d support whatever her plan is and make it work.
Emerald, although poor, has a happy family. Dimitrie, on the other hand, has a mother who belittles him; a father who can rule a Kingdom but not his family, and a sister who is so evil that I want to transform her into an ugly amphibian for the rest of her wretched life! My heart goes out to Dimitrie. He is such a good guy that I could not imagine his own flesh and blood treats him so badly. This goes to show that even rich people, with all the money in the world, can be more miserable than poor people with barely enough to eat.
What I love about this book is I get to live in the world of gypsies. Their history, the magic they produce and the rules in using magic. Riveting story! This is not ‘Harry Potter’ though but you’ll be amaze how extraordinary a life of a gypsy is.
Okay, so for the “not-so-good” about the book. One, some parts of the story can be omitted because of its repetitive nature, like a dialogue that has been mentioned once THEN mentioned again but has no major value in the story. Two, last page left me hanging. There’s not a complete conclusion of the story, I’m thinking that the author MAYBE doing a second book but she’s holding it hostage for now. LOL! Just kidding! But really, I don’t mind another dose of gypsy life, but I hope the focus of the book would be one of Emerald’s sisters. I’m curious what kind of story they’ll have.
