Now eligible for courtship, many men hope to be the lucky groom selected to marry the Duke and Duchess of Crawley’s beautiful daughter, Farren Montbassen. Farren only considers one man acceptable- a notorious knight enjoying a carefree life with little interest in the prospect of marriage. Sir Patton Caswell cannot help but be intrigued by the beauty and grace of the spirited young woman. Everything seems to be falling into place until a rejected suitor and his father decide to take matters of Farren’s marriage into their own hands.

The forthcoming Marquess of Farnborough, Bayard Norshire, plans to scare Farren into marriage by giving her an ultimatum- marriage, or the death of her family. By kidnapping the Duke and Duchess of Crawley, Bayard thinks he holds their young daughter’s future in his hands. Sent to the rescue by King Edward III, Patton takes Farren on a journey of a lifetime to save the Duke and Duchess before Farren is forced into marriage with the despicable young Marquess.

Once again, Patton did not know whether to feel relieved or worried, “And, pray tell, who was your first favorite man at the ball?” he teased with a devilish grin.

This time Farren was in no mood to start an argument, although she did not want him to know how deeply her feelings went. Two can play at this game, she thought. “Well he was tall… dark haired… a handsome devil, that’s for sure,” she teased.

“He sounds like a catch. I know I could not compete with someone like that,” Patton played along.

“Oh no, you surely could not. He was a knight, so charming and romantic. Believe me, no one could have competed with him,” she giggled.

“Well are you going to marry the gentleman?” Patton asked in a suddenly serious voice.

“Well, you see, if he asked me I would. But that will not happen, I’m sure. He is a man who couldn’t be tied down by a woman like me,” Farren replied in the same tone.

“Try me,” Patton whispered, leaning towards her. Suddenly he could not help himself for one more moment; all he wanted was to be closer to her. All the hurt and angry feelings he had suffered from for the past several months were erased and all he could think about was a future with this woman. Her scent was intoxicating; her eyes made him feel as if he were in a trance. He had never seen someone so breathtakingly beautiful in all his travels around Europe.

Farren locked eyes with him and for a moment she thought he was going to kiss her. Nervously she looked away, breaking the spell they had on each other. “Sir Caswell,” she sighed “I do not have the strength for heartbreak right now.”

It is a truth universally acknowledge, that a young beautiful lady must choose a husband at her coming-of-age ball to marry, build a family, and have babies. This is a huge task for Farren Montbassen, the only daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Crawley, who is more willing to find herself a bachelor with an acceptable title, hefty amount of wealth under his name, and of course with good looks. But that is not all what Farren desires in a husband. She must fall in love with him and vice versa! Now the former qualifications are not a difficult feat to accomplish, what with her good looks, easy charm, and manners, Farren will not have any problem snagging a suitable partner for marriage. Falling in love is the difficult part. She wants to be swept away from her feet, see stars when they kiss, and just be head over heels in love. The problem is, someone already captured her heart and he, unfortunately, do not feel the same way for Farren (or does he?)

But when a rejected suitor threatens Farren’s family if she will not marry him, Farren begins to doubt her safety and the people she loves. She begins to question her principles, even the one-sided love that she felt for the dashing Knight who thinks of her only as a liability.

This book is a historical romance (duh?) with a mixture of wit, adventure, morals, and Christian values. I was a bit surprised with the Christian values part but it was a nice addition considering I’ve been reading a lot of kinky sex lately. I don’t mind reading those steamy books but this is actually a change for me, and I like it! The main and supporting characters are absolutely lovable (with the exception of the villain, of course). Funny, supportive, and easy to connect with. One of the characters I love is Lucy, Farren’s maid. She reminds me of my mom’s best friend who took care of me when mom’s away for a business trip. She’s like my second mom and Farren feels that way to Lucy, too. I just want to hug her and thank her for all the things she did for Farren.

Funny moments in the book always involves Patton Caswell and Farren Montbassen. Their continuous heated retort with each other is beyond entertaining but not to the point of boredom. Both try very hard to avoid the pull of attraction that made me go insane and wanted to knock their heads together! I’m honestly not well verse with the medieval era so the simple description of the locale is most helpful. I like the mixture of adventure, too! I get to learn how life in 1300 Southeast, England feels like.

However, there are parts of the book that is too lengthy and repetitive making me dizzy in the process. It would help if some parts would be omitted or shorten to make it more engaging. So far, that is all the negative feelings I have for this book. All in all, I’d give it a 4.5-star! I thoroughly enjoy reading it and I would definitely read MORE of Brittany Jo James in the future.
